FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Richmond, VIRGINIA, October 16, 2023 – Gov. Glenn Youngkin today announced the first, statewide intensive math tutoring program for third- through eighth-grade students. The Virginia Math High Impact Statewide Tutoring Program offers all school divisions across the Commonwealth access to Zearn Math – the top-rated math learning platform created by the nonprofit Zearn – at no cost. The Program is part of ALL In Tutoring  promoting excellence in instruction and student achievement in mathematics, as outlined in the bipartisan bill HB 938.

“Teachers built Zearn Math as technology to complement teaching,” said Zearn CEO and Co-Founder Shalinee Sharma. “We know this investment, which will provide access to grade-level learning, will support the work of Virginia school divisions and teachers in accelerating the math learning of all kids.”

The Virginia Department of Education selected Zearn to accelerate student math learning based on its transformative results for all kids. School divisions can design their own tutoring programs, as outlined in the High-Intensity Tutoring Playbook, utilizing Zearn’s K-8 math platform. Zearn, which is aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics, offers more than 1,000 digital lessons, real-time progress monitoring, ongoing educator training and tutoring resources.

Tutors can flexibly implement personalized learning sessions, supported by Zearn’s grade-level lessons, before or after school or doing school breaks, including summer. Families can also use Zearn at no cost.

As shown in multiple large-scale studies, students who consistently used Zearn each week grew state math scores 2.5 times more than students who did not use Zearn. Additionally, approximately 70% of students at the lowest level of math achievement who consistently used Zearn improved their achievement level on state tests, compared to just 45% of students who did not use Zearn.
